Earlier this morning at the 2013 KINBER Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh, State College-based Keystone Inittiative for Network Based Education and Investigation (KINBER) announced that Velocity Network connected the Pennsylvania Study and Education Network to the WQLN Public Media studios in Erie, Penn., and effectively transmitted data to WPSU in State College, Penn. The connection is a milestone for KINBER and represents the 1st time a last-mile provider linked organizations that are not connected directly to the PennREN network.

KINBER will now use this model as a template to recreate this variety of connectivity with other members and last-mile providers across the state, said Jeff Reel, KINBERs executive director.

According to Dwight Miller, the former president of WQLN, This connection will let WQLN to do factors they havent previously been able to do. They will be far more effective even though utilizing fewer sources. For instance, WPSU produces Penn State sports applications. To get that HD file to WQLN, they had to put it on a thumb drive and drop it in the mail.

The connection among WQLN and WPSU will provide every organization with a host of new possibilities that have been not achievable before. WPSU is eager to collaborate on this technology partnership with PennREN, said Kate Domico, interim general manager of Penn State Public Media/WPSU. This direct connection to WQLN will allow us to provide viewers in Northwest Pennsylvania greater access to Penn State programming as quickly as this fall.

Velocity Network and other last mile providers connect KINBERs member organizations and other interested non-profit organizations straight to PennREN to give access to services and options supplied by KINBER.

PennREN is managed by KINBER, a non-profit organization devoted to fostering collaboration by way of technologies for greater education and study, K 12 education, healthcare, libraries and public media. According to KINBER, Pennsylvania was the 38th state to generate such a network.

The availability of PennREN fiber optic connections in Erie location implies other regional non-profit organizations such as universities and hospitals can collaborate with facilities across the commonwealth and take benefit of the opportunities that fiber optic service brings to an organization. For example, a health-related facility can share information with a remote workplace or a professor can lecture to students at an additional facility hundreds of miles away.

Fiber optic service has the potential to let organizations expand and boost their worldwide communications as well as handle future fees, said Joel Deuterman, CEO of Velocity Network. Currently, Velocity Network is the Erie areas only locally-headquartered provider of fiber optic and Internet services.
