Friendship Academy Students Show Creativity By means of Murals

Regional Pittsburgh artist Alison Zapata spent a number of weeks with students at The Watson Institute Friendship Academy generating a series of murals depicting Pittsburgh scenes and icons. The final results of their efforts are six murals that will adorn the hallways of the college in Pittsburghs Friendship neighborhood for many years to come.

Alison brainstormed suggestions with groups of students responsible for each and every mural. As the respective themes for each mural came together, Alison guided the students via the procedure to turn their visions into reality. Murals depicted renowned musicians, sports figures and other dignitaries from Pittsburgh, as nicely as Pittsburghs popular skyline and rivers.

The students came together with several suggestions to form a single collective voice via visual art mentioned Alison. Orinda Academy Junior, YingYu Ren, Wins Several Awards for Academic Excellence, Public Service and Leadership

Orinda Academy announced these days that YingYu Ren, 17, a member of the schools junior class, is a recipient of 3 awards recognizing her academic achievement, service and leadership.

Ren is a single of only ten students in the nation to win A Greater Likelihood Award for Excellence for academic distinction, contributions to the college community and demonstrated capacity to attain. The award is from the organization, A Better Opportunity, which performs to improve the number of effectively-educated young people of color who are capable of assuming positions of duty and leadership in American society.

The 2013 Alexander Hamilton Citizenship Achievement Award was also awarded to Ren. It recognizes youth who demonstrate leadership skills, academic excellence and a passion for public service.

Rens writing talent earned her the 2013 Pals of the Orinda Library Poul Anderson Writing Contest in the Essay/Memoir category. Her entry titled, The Inspiring Ocean, details how her expertise with the ocean impacted and parallels her life, from the time she was an infant in China to nowadays as she looks toward her future.

Former ASCD President Joins NEF to Head up Federal Grants/STEM Academy division

Dr. Art Stellar, to head NEFs Midwest and Southern region federal grants/ STEM Academy division. We are tremendously excited about Arts plans for our federal grants and STEM Academy programs commented NEFS Chairman Dr. Appu Kuttan. Stellars primary role is to aid school districts across the United States (specifically KS, MO, IL, TN, GA, MS, & FL) apply for and receive funding through the Federal Qualified Zone Academy Bonds (QZAB) program (http://www.qzab.org).

Each state has millions of dollars available with most being currently unclaimed. This funding is first come, first served and may not exist in the future if left unused or not utilized according to the Federal requirements. Stellar brings a broad range of educational experience to NEF. He has served as superintendent of school districts in various states, as well as being a central office administrator, principal, coach, and teacher. He was also elected vice-president of the New York State PTA and chairman of the Board for the National Dropout Prevention Center at Clemson University.
